Leaflet on the gathering of NRIC numbers released by the PDPC

13 November in Singapore

The Personal Data Protection Commission (‘PDPC’) issued, on 13 November 2018, a leaflet (‘the Leaflet’) on considerations regarding the collection of national registration identity cards (‘NRIC’) for organisations. In particular, the PDPC highlighted that, from 1 September 2019, organisations are expected to stop collecting, using and disclosing customers’ NRIC and other national identification numbers where it is not required under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012.

Moreover, the Leaflet outlines alternative options organisations may consider, including using unique identifiers, identifying an individual using their own chosen identification, or using the partial NRIC number in combination with other data. In addition, the PDPC noted that organisations may also refer to its Technical Guide to Advisory Guidelines on the Protection of Personal Data Act for NRIC and Other National Identification Numbers.
